What is a breast lift?
A breast lift is a procedure used to reposition the breasts higher up on the chest when sagging and drooping are a concern. This often happens over time as the elasticity of the breast tissue is stretched, causing the breasts to droop and even point downward. With a breast lift, breast tissue is removed, the skin is tightened, and in many cases, the nipples and areola are adjusted to a more natural and youthful position.
What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is often done for women who have emotional or physical limitations due to the size of their breasts. Breast reductions are often done for those who have neck, shoulder, and back pain from the weight of their breasts on the front of the body. Women also choose to have breast reduction if they are uncomfortable with the size of their breasts, are limited in the activities they can pursue due to their breast size, or if they have trouble finding clothing that fits them properly due to their breast size.
Breast lift vs. breast reduction
Why would a patient choose one over the other? Interestingly enough, a breast reduction is often done in conjunction with a breast lift. This is because the removal of the excess breast tissue can leave behind excess skin that needs to be accounted for when reconstructing the breasts afterwards. Many patients will have a breast lift completed at the same time as their reduction to achieve the best results.
