Tech Neck: What You Should Know

by Ellen Mahony

Tech Neck: What You Should Know - Westport, CT People spend countless hours staring at screens in today’s digital age. Whether it’s our phones, tablets, or computers, it can cause several issues. One of the issues is our poor posture, which is called “tech neck.” Understanding tech neck treatments can help you prevent long-term problems.

What Is Tech Neck?

Tech neck refers to the strain on your neck and shoulders caused by looking down at screens for prolonged periods. The human head weighs about 10-12 pounds, but when you tilt your head forward to look at your phone, the pressure on your neck can increase significantly.

At a 60-degree angle, your neck is bearing about 60 pounds of force! This repetitive strain can lead to discomfort, headaches, and even more severe problems. One can suffer from disc damage.

Symptoms of Tech Neck

Some common symptoms of tech neck include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Shoulder tension
  • Headaches
  • Reduced mobility in the neck
  • Poor posture

Over time, these symptoms can worsen if corrective actions aren’t taken. Chronic tech neck may lead to muscle imbalances, which can further impact your spine’s alignment.

Prevention and Treatment

The good news is that tech neck can be prevented or managed with some simple changes.

Keep your screen at eye level to avoid looking down. Whether you’re working at a desk or using your phone, maintaining a neutral spine position will reduce strain on your neck.

Plus, take a break every 20 minutes from your screen. Stretch your neck, roll your shoulders, and do some gentle exercises to relieve tension.

Incorporating exercises that target your neck, shoulders, and upper back can help build muscle support and improve posture.

Lastly, corticosteroids or Botox injections can also help. For persistent pain, corticosteroid injections may be recommended to reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief. Plus, Botox may be used to relax neck muscles and reduce discomfort.
