The difference between toxins and fillers

by Ellen Mahony

Dr. Ellen Mahony help Westport, CT area patients with a wide range of cosmetic concerns using surgical and nonsurgical solutions. One of the more commonly requested treatments is that of cosmetic injectables. These injections are often used in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that can appear on the face during the process of aging. There are many different types of cosmetic injectables, and two that are commonly confused are neurotoxins and dermal fillers.

What’s the difference?

Neurotoxins and dermal fillers work differently, though they both achieve a more youthful look:

  • Neurotoxins. Neurotoxins are injectables that are formulated with botulinum toxin type A. This medication is used to reduce muscle contractions. When a patient has dynamic wrinkles that have formed on the face, such as crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and forehead folds, they can be treated effectively with neurotoxins. Neurotoxins are injected into the muscles directly and can last many months.
  • Dermal fillers. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injected into the skin where wrinkles and folds appear. These injectables are commonly formulated with an ingredient known as hyaluronic acid, which attracts water molecules. This gel-like injectable is used to smooth the skin by adding volume to deep wrinkles and folds for a more youthful look.

Because dermal fillers and neurotoxins are different, they can be combined together for optimum results. Patients are also encouraged to ask about another type of cosmetic injectable that can be used for volume loss. Collagen stimulates are injected into areas such as the cheeks to add volume by increasing the skin’s production of collagen to replace collagen that is naturally lost during the aging process.
